Man acquitted of triple-murder charges

EASTMAN, Ga.
Moments after a Dodge County jury acquitted a man of triple murder charges, the
mother of a victim embraced her son's accused killer.
After 10 hours of deliberation, 27-year-old Sean Coley was cleared Friday of the
murder charges of James Brimberry, Renee Bryant and Charlene "Angel" Jenkins.
After the verdict, Thelma Brimberry was among the first to congratulate Coley.
"I knew from the day of the indictment by spirit that he didn't do it," she said of
the murder of her son, James.
Prosecutors contended that Coley and Brimberry were both drug dealers and that Coley
killed Brimberry for his money and then shot the two women because they were
witnesses.
The prosecution's case centered on a cigarette butt found next to Brimberry's body
that contained Coley's DNA. Also, Coley's uncle told police he found under Coley's
front porch a gun that was later identified as the murder weapon.
Coley's defense attorney, Frank Hogue, suggested the cigarette may have come from a
car that happened upon the murder scene in the rural central Georgia county. And he
contended that Coley's uncle was after a $19,000 reward in the case.
Coley must still serve 19 months in prison on a parole violation from a prior drug
conviction.
"I think the jury has ignored the great volume of evidence, but that's their
prerogative," "I'm very disappointed," said Oconee Circuit District Attorney Tim
Vaughn. "I'm glad the defendant is going back to prison, which is where he belongs."
