I was terminated early this week for "conduct unbecoming to a supervisor". No details were shown to me in the meeting, no reasons as to why, other than that. I was a 26 year employee (13 years in a supervisory position) with this company, and the conduct they found "unbecoming" was being accused of having an affair with a 25 year old. She is office personnel and not a direct report of mine. We work in the same department, under the same department head, but she is not a direct report. As far as she or I both know, there is no proof. Neither of us have admitted to anything.

She is separated, but still married, I am separated, but still married. Here you must be separated for a year before they will grant you a divorce. We did begin seeing each other during the past year, and she is now 7 months pregnant. We both remained completely discreet and under the radar concerning our personal affairs, in spite of her being written up 2 times for attendance without documentation, sexual / mental / verbal harrassment from her OWN supervisor, etc. (she has her own case pending, their intent is to fire her as well.) Somehow our relationship was brought to the attention of H.R. as they were accusing me of telling / "coaching" her to go to the labor board with her complaints against her supervisor, when all she did was talk to the Manager of the HR dept about policies and work instructions.

While we are both married, this may in and of itself may seem rather horrid, there are absolutely no policies written in handbooks, policies or work instructions about inter-office relationships. I also think this may be a case of age discrimination as it was known I was going to retire within the next year and a half. They did not force me into early retirement, they did not give me that option. They simply gave me a document drafted by an attorney that offered me 4 months severance pay and insurance benefits after 26 years of being employed there, WHILE waiving my right to sue. I did not sign it, and the lawyer advised me I was correct in not signing it, and our plan is to counter offer with 13 months of severance pay and benefits, as well as my earned bonus. The lawyer suggested that we sue on contingency if they withdraw the original offer. The lawyer is also very interested in her case as well, and she has an appointment with the same lawyer on Monday.

Does this sound like a possible case of wrongful termination? She has not been to HR to make complaints against me, nor I against her. We are happy and awaiting the birth of our daughter in December, but I don't want my first child coming into this world to a father that has nothing to provide for her.
