yet another wrongful termination (Employment & Labor Law)

Mon, 05 Jun 2000 19:54:00 GMT

My wife and I worked for the same man (2 different companies, however, they were at the same location). A few months ago, my wife and I began to suspect that our boss was having an affair with another employee (someone who worked for her company).
Shortly after our suspisions began, he called her into his office one day and confessed. He was indeed having and affair, with the girl we suspected. My wife told him that she would not contact his wife and tell her about the affair, but being a friend of hers, if the wife asked, she would tell the truth. The boss agreed.
A couple of months went by, and I walked in on them in my office, and witnessed some very inappropiate behavior! The affair was still going hot and heavy!
Still a few months goes by, a suddenly the boss's wife FINALLY figures it out. She calls my wife, and as promised, my wife tells the truth. The next day, 1 hour before she gets off of work, the boss calls my wife into his office and tells her she is being laid off because he can't work with anyone who makes false accusations about him, however he does tell her she is not being fired, she is being laid off so she can draw unemployement.
Can he do this? He gave me an entireley differently reason for letting her go, and gave another employee still another reason. We all know he is only trying to protect his marriage, but this is wrong!
What can I do?! I am not a vengeful person, but he has ruined my wife's reputation, and significantly lowered our monthly income!
Please help!
Pepper

  • You could sue the heck out of him -- and my sense is that he would not want that. You might want to negotiate a smart separation now as an alternative, and not as a blackmail attempt.
