Employment and Labor Law: Youth Labor in AZ, Any Exemptions Available? Alaska

Hi All,

I am new to this group, and am trying to get a question answered about the restrictions put on those employed before the age of 16. I am an employee at a movie theatre in the Phoenix area, and I am 15. I am aware of the 3 hr on school day, 8 on non, as well as 18 hrs per week during school year, etc. becuase my company follows these rules to the T. However, I am wondering if there is a way I can exempt myself and allow my self to work more hours, becuase I am in need of the money. Any help would be appriciated, because I cannot access the list of exemptions on the DOL website.

Thanks!!

Ask your principal or school guidance counselor... they have a pretty good handle on the local laws.

There are some schools that offer school credit for holding a job. My daughter worked in her senior year, and I don't know which class it replaced, but she only had to go to school until a little after 1 pm, so she could go to work. I also do not know if you do this, that it will change state laws. It may be that weather you want to work or not, because penalties are so high for going against child labor laws, that they would not chance it, even if you were willing to do it.

If the law says you can only work x hours, then you can only work x hours. There is no way to exempt yourself from the law.
