YTD shows too much money (Employment & Labor Law)

I work for a small family business in a clerical/sales position. My issues with this employer really began last year when I took a 6-week maternity leave. I had taken a 6-week maternity leave before and was told I would be paid for 4 weeks, which I was. I assumed that this time would be no different, but I received pay for only two weeks. I talked with the employer who said they could not remember what they did the last time and would check his records. After a few weeks (at least two) I made a request in writing for an answer either way. I received no response other than "I am still looking into it and I will get back to you." I took this as a lesson to never assume and left it go. No further response was ever received.
Just two weeks ago when I received my pay check, I noticed that there was a discrepancy in the Year to Date column that showed more money than I was actually paid for commissions. This made me look at my last stub from 2007 and it shows I was paid 25 paychecks (I get paid bi-weekly and make the same amount in gross wages each time). I went back to the stub I received prior to starting maternity leave and it also shows an extra pay in the Year to Date column.
I immediately penned a letter to my employer pointing out the discrepancies and asking for them to be corrected. I even pointed out where I thought the 2007 discrepancy occurred (my two-year old son emptied my purse in the trash, including my paycheck, and I had to ask for a replacement check).
The only response I've received is from my immediate supervisor (the boss's daughter, the payroll guy's sister), and it was to tell me that her brother was still looking into it, and he didn't know how he was going to figure it out. Today I received my paycheck (a day late, as usual) and I see that he has not even corrected the error from just a couple of months ago.
The thing is, I need this job. My family lives paycheck to paycheck as it is, and job availability in this area is next to nothing. So I do not want to file a complaint unless I have to. What else can I do? I intend to follow up with another written request, but how long should I wait? And what if no response is received to that request?
