zero tolerqance (Employment & Labor Law)

Thu, 23 Feb 2006 19:49:00 GMT

My place of employment in CA has a zero tolerance policy. It is a non-profit, with a banquet facility, which does serve alcohol. A new manager has been hired and he has offered alcohol to 2 different employees on different occasions. How should this be handled?

  • I am a catering manager, the new manager is the banquet manager. The person being offered the alcohol is part of the kitchen staff. He did report it to his supervisor, the culinary manager, who took it to HR. HR in turn told the banquet manager who it was that made the complaint. The banquet manager has now confronted the original complainer, leaving him very uncomfortable.
Is there anything that he can do, or has the situation been handled correctly?

I am trying to be uinvolved with the whole situation, but people in the 2 departments keep coming to me and I would like to know how to advise them or if I should.

  • Your best bet is to remain uninvolved and to tell the others who are coming to you, to do the same. Whether it was correctly handled or not (and that's very hard to say with the limited information available) it is no one's business except the people who are directly involved.

  • Of course! but what if it continues...

  • It might help us answer the question if you would explain what your position in this issue is. Are you the HR person? The manager's boss?

  • I assume you mean zero tolerance for alcohol consumption or being under the influence while at work? Then, when the manager offers, you say no.
