• He can't come and take your child unless you let him. However, to protect you and your child I would fiel in court asap for full custody. If you can get a lawyer that would be good!

  Or even if you receive PA . Better ? Lets not bash temporary assistance. Many batter women w/ children temporarily rely on tax payers until they can become tax payers again.
  A man has to fend for himself / no battered mens places.
  And who knows, they may end up paying back in substantially more taxes.

• I thought these forums were for helping, not for judging. It is amazing how many people find something to judge others on. Many people who are posting to these forums are first time divorcees in an emotional time in their life. Why judge what they are typing? If they say I or my child, who cares!?! Many people just type the first thing that pops out! I always called "our" kids "my" kids, unless they were being bad, then they were "your" kids! Not trying to be rude, but try to remember that these people are having a hard enough time without being berated about their choice of wording in these posts.
  ALSO, don't knock people on public assistance unless you have been in their shoes. Granted, there are many people who abuse it, but there are also many who use it for good. I am a single mom who is working part time and going to college full time and am on public assistance. It is helping me through school, and as someone else pointed out, after I graduate from college and hopefully get a decent job I will make up for it in taxes.

  Just to let you know... Here in Maryland you must have a job to be on Public Asst. So she is paying taxes also....
  sorry for your rude comment, but not everyone can make it in this world on there own, That is why we have help in this country. Thats really ignorant of you all I hope you never need any type of help from the government.

  Once again, the arrival of a 'new' woman has the absent father running to court for custody. It's gotta be a woman thing. I never read dad's saying now that mom has a new boyfriend, she wants to change custody because he'll help her; it's always the women! It's like if the 'new' woman can take the kids or stop the support or stop the alimony, some how it's like her man didn't have sex with or love the mother of his children. I'm gonna start with this post and record the number of 'new' woman on the scene problems, like I keep threatening to do!

• I don't think there is anything wrong with public assistance per se. If it is used as intended, then it is a good thing. However, don't fool yourself into thinking that you will "make up for it" with your tax dollars to make yourself feel better. There are plenty of people who pay their taxes without ever going on public assistance. There are plenty of people who paid their way through college working menial jobs and struggling without public assistance. You won't "catch up" to them. Just admit you needed help and you took it. As long as you didn't take advantage of it, there is no reason to be ashamed.

• Is there any kind of Custody/Visitation Order now ?
  If not, be the first one to file . As long as you can financially support yourself, even if it's through public assistance , I doubt if the child's Father will be awarded physical Custody.
  You would have to be proven unfit .
  File for Court Ordered Physical Custody , Child Support in a separate Petition, and visitation schedule for the father.
  Even though the child(s) father abused you, if he has not abused the child and is not consider violent , he could & should take responsibility and have a relationship with Your child.
  The child is NOT just yours . Both Parents should be involved with their children.
  This is a legal Advice Forum, Emotions will not decide a Court Case. ! Just remember that.

• Im in Maryland also. Listen Please go file it is very simple, you will have the upper hand I have 2 children and my ex threaten to mine also. unless they have proof that you are doing drugs, abusing or neglecting this child he cant do it. Has the child been in your care the whole time?
  And the order against him will help. But you must go file first very important. I know its hard, it was for me but after I did it I felt so much better knowing they would be with me. You can also have the filing fee's waived. ask them for the form
