F-1 to H1-B (Immigration Law)

Hi,
I got approved in April for the H1-B visa, while still working on a degree. I have been working since with the company on CPT authorization. However, I didn't register for the fall semester since I wanted to work full-time. I have been notified by the Int'l students office that my F-1 record has been terminated. But the H1-B petition becomes effective on the 1st of October (next week Monday).

Can I automatically change status to H1-B? If no, do I need to leave the country to apply for an H1-B visa to change status? If yes to the latter, can I do it in Mexico/Canada or return to my home country?
