Form G-325A questions (Immigration Law)

Sat, 28 Aug 2004 09:44:00 GMT

Hello,

I have a couple of questions filling in names on forms:

a) First of all, the forms generally have spaces for
"Family name" and "First name". How do you handle names
that don't follow this convention, ie. which don't really
have a "family name", just given names. Also, these names
may not share any portion of the father or mother's names.

Now, I have a related question about the G-325A form:

b) This is a "fillable" form which has a given number of spaces
per field. In the case of my fiancee, her father's name is
too large for these fields. What do we do?
Should we print the form without it and handwrite it in?
Should we print out an empty form and handwrite everything?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards,
Kevin

I think you would need to fill all boxes and type in N/A or NONE in the
boxes where there is no name to write in there, (this is one of the rea-
sons USCIS require the Long Form Birth Cert for determining the parents
on the birth cert and so making sure they are who they say they are)
As far as the fillable form goes, some are locked BUT if the form is not
locked from editing, a FULL version of Acrobat can change the font size
on the form and so allow for longer names to be entered.

    Hi:

In "immediate relative" spouse cases, the "short form" birth certificat-
    es are fine.

What's the diff between "short form" and "long form"? I am filing for
my husband (as immidiate relative, naturally) and he doesn't have orig-
inal so someone else who did this in China said he can get this with
his ID from the police where he's registered. I assume that would be a
    "short form"?

Hi Kevin. Does your fiancee have any legal documents stating a legal
first and family name such as a birth certificate, identification card,
or passport? This may help you in determining what to write in the fir-
st and family name spaces. Also, since many people do not share the sa-
me names of their parents, this should not be a problem for you.

Also, if you cannot reduce the font size of the fillable form it should
not be a problem to type everything else in and simply print that space
clearly. Typing as much as possible is probably easiest to correct any
mistakes, as well as possibly easiest to read. Good luck!

    Hi:

You assume wrong. Go to http://travel.state.gov and find the "visa rec-
iprocity tables" [I'm not all that familiar with their new layout] and
    drill down to China.

The "long" and "short" forms usually apply to birth certificates from
the British Commonwealth. The "short" form lists name, date and place
of birth. The "long form" will list name, date and place of birth,
and names of parents. Quite often there will be even more information
    than that.

Many countries, such as the PRC, do not have birth certificates as unde-
rstood in the US. However, the visa reciprocity tables noted above set
    ou the acceptable substitutes.

That's excellent, thanks! Basically what someone told me, but very usef-

  • This link will take you to a fillable form that allows 16 characters in the
name, if that is enough for you.

    Hi:

The use of "family name" has replaced "last name" -- Asian countries use
the family name first. Iceland and Arabic cultures just often use fath-
er's name or a variation. As a general rule, use what would be conside-
red how that person would be referred in identity documents.

On the form -- if he fillable form won't take dad's name, fill out ever-
ything elese, print it out, and then WRITE it on all four copies.

BTW, the G-325A is a very forgiving form -- incomplete information does-
n't hurt you all that much.
