GC Stamped in passport & travelling/moving (Immigration Law)

Sat, 28 Feb 2004 05:39:00 GMT

Now that my GC is stamped to my passport, can I travel outside the
US? Also, if I choose to move to another state, will I have any
problems?

Finally, how long will it take to see the real GC?

Yes. Great!!!! =))) Also, if I choose to move to another state, will I have any problems? No. Just remember to file the change-of-address form (AR-11). Will do. Do they process it for real? Last time I had to change address, I found out they were still sending letters to the old address even though I send AR-11 and told the post office about the change (it would not forward my INS correspondence =( ). After one year and a few trips to the JAX office they seemed to get their act together. That said, good thing I had a laywer since he receives a copy of my stuff.

In the sense that you understand it, no, they don't process the AR-11.
They enter it into some computer system somewhere and then don't tell any
of the local offices that your address changed.

The AR-11 is only for one purpose: to fulfill a legal requirement. After
9/11, the thousand so-called "terrorism suspects" that Ashcroft so proudly
announced were arrested for all kinds of violations that had nothing to do
with terrorism, including quite a few for failing to file an AR-11.

By the way, you have to file the AR-11 even if you don't have any dealings
with USCIS. Only US citizens are exempt from this requirement.
Finally, how long will it take to see the real GC? Varies wildly, anything between a few weeks and two years is possible. Do remember to change your address with the USCIS office that approved your GC - the AR-11 will *not* do that. And do expect the GC to be mailed to the old address anyway. Lovely. I was really hoping I could now move out of this apartment into something a bit nicer. Oh well, for someone who waited a few years I guess I can wait a bit longer. I will be keeping my fingers crossed hoping they will send it to me in a few months or so. =)
