Yee-Hah! Passed my naturalization interview! (Immigration Law)

Tue, 12 Aug 2003 08:29:00 GMT

I feel like a hundred tonnes has been lifted from my shoulders! My
naturalization interview was at 8:45 this morning in Hartford, CT. At
first, the omens were bad. I was hoping to arrive at least half an hour
early, but we had roadworks all the way into the city, and then couldn't
find a parking space near the Federal Building. By the time we finally
arrived, it was 8:40.

After going to room 421 and handing in my interview letter, my wife and
I sat down in preparation for a long wait, since the waiting room was
already packed with people. Imagine my surprise when my name was called
within five minutes, at 8:45 on the dot.

The interviewing officer was a nice, friendly young woman who did
everything she could to put me at ease. After I swore to tell the truth,
she started by checking my green card and passport, and quickly
confirming all the questions I had provided in my application. I was
asked if I wanted to change my name (No). Two corrections were required
for the application---first, because I had taken two trips outside the
U.S. since filing, and second because my job title changed when I was
promoted last month.

Then we got to the government/civics test, which I aced with 10 out of
10. All the questions were from the standard list of 100.

She didn't ask to see my tax returns or the tax transcript that I took
along, and neither did she ask to see any other documentation. But she
did ask if my wife was present, which she was. She called my wife in and
asked her to sign a declaration confirming that we are still married and
still living together.

The only catch was that the photographs I had provided were too small.
So she gave me a letter of continuance, requesting that I provide
replacement photos. Luckily, there is a photo office in the building, so
I just got them done there. But they had to be signed on the back in
pencil with my name and A#, and guess what? We couldn't find a single
pencil in the whole goddamned building. In the end, we had to walk down
the street to my office to get a pencil. Once that was done, we returned
the photos with the continuance letter to Room 421.

At the end of the interview, she told me that a letter would be sent
with my oath date, so I presume I passed. She informed me that I would
be scheduled for an oath ceremony in Hartford on September 5.

Apart from the pencil search, the whole process took about ten minutes,
and was a bit of an anti-climax after all the worrying I've been doing.
But it's nearly all over now, although I'm not going to celebrate until
I've actually got my naturalization certificate in hand.

So for anybody stressing about their interview, all I can say is don't
worry about it. Leave early to make sure you find a parking space, and
most importantly of all, TAKE A PENCIL! :)

Thanks to everybody on this board for all the great advice and input
over the past year. Even though I haven't participated much in these
discussions, I have been reading everything. I will post one last time
when I take the oath.

Good luck everybody!

Shaggy

  • Thanks for the kind words, guys. Well, I have some more news. Just 48
hours after my interview, my oath notice was in the mailbox this
morning! I was expecting to wait for at least a couple of weeks. Is
    this a record?

Anyway, I'm taking the oath at the U.S. District Court in Hartford on
Friday, September 5. I'll have plenty of friends and relatives there
to witness it. Afterwards, we'll have a massive blowout to celebrate,
and once I sober up, I'll apply for my first U.S. passport and
    register to vote.

The journey is nearly over, and I never thought it would be so smooth.

    Good luck everybody.
