Real Estate and Property Law: year to year lease/rental...im screwed ?

Im in alabama, I signed a contract for a year lease on may 03 and we had a verbal agreement we would move in on 1st of june 03, we moved in arounf may 20 and landlord prorated our rent.
so jump a year later, we called our landlord (management co.) to see if they could help us find a house to buy or lease to purchase and let them know we would be moving to a new schooldistrict for my children (better schools), the lady who answed said she wasnt aware of anything but would have the owner (who leased the house to us) get back to us, they never did, we didnt see a letter from them in june about a new rental agreement so i went and saw them on the 20 of june and told him we had located a house and wanted to see how many days we needed to give him to move out, and he then informed us that the contract was a "year to year" and automatically renewed in may so we were in another year lease with him,,,this is bad because we already gave the person we are buying the house from the down payment and signed an agreement with him as well.
I have read that most state courts do not like year to year auto renewing residential leases? anyone have any ideas on ehat i should do, i can pay one two more months rent but that is cutting it and 2 months is max know.
thanks

My response:
Please quote the exact words of the condition from your lease concerning "termination" of the lease, and the exact words of the condition of your lease concerning "automatic renewal".

Please look at YOUR lease agreement. Do you see anything stipulating this "Never Ending" lease?
