Detectives: Family met with suspect

Wednesday, July 6, 2005
By TAMMY McCOY / The Press-Enterprise

Relatives of the man accused of killing an Army National Guardsman met
the accused in Hemet before he left for Mexico, police testified
Wednesday.

Fabian Urrea, his parents, Alicia and Cayetano Urrea, sisters and
maternal aunt Margaret Arambula met at a friend's Hemet apartment at
about 9 a.m. on June 9 following the slaying of Spc. Jorge Estrada,
Murrieta police Det. Jeff Ullrich testified.

"It was emotional," Ullrich said of the family meeting. "They were
having a family discussion about where he could go."

Murrieta police testified during Patricia Urrea's preliminary hearing
at the Southwest Justice Center. The 24-year-old Hemet resident is
accused of helping her brother avoid capture. She has pleaded not
guilty to the charge.

Estrada, 24, was shot at about 7:42 a.m. in a Jackson Avenue apartment
complex parking lot in Murrieta, Ullrich testified. Fabian Urrea, 19,
of Mead Valley, is wanted on a murder charge.

Patricia Urrea enlisted help from friend Victoria Marmollejo, who told
police about the numerous conversations she overheard that day, the
detectives testified.

"There was a conversation about what (Fabian ) was going to do next,
what to do with the gun and how to get to the apartment," Ullrich
said.

"What happened to the gun?" Deputy District Attorney Stephen Gallon
asked.

"Fabian was going to get rid of it," the detective replied.

"He had it and was going to get rid of it?" Gallon asked.

"Correct," the detective said.

Fabian Urrea's aunt, Margaret Arambula told police that she drove her
sister, Alicia Urrea, to the family meeting in Hemet. Arambula is also
charged with accessory to murder in connection with this case.

"She told me they were discussing where Fabian could go to flee,"
Murrieta police DetectivePhillip Gomez said.

On cross-examination, defense lawyer G. David Haigh asked Gomez if the
family tried to persuade Fabian Urrea to turn himself in.

"Everyone was trying to pursuade Fabian to turn himself in," Gomez
said.

"Alicia Urrea did tell Fabian that it was not good to be on the run?"
Haigh asked.

"Yes," Gomez replied.

After a lengthy family conversation, Fabian Urrea asked his aunt to
drive him to the Mexico border, Gomez said. Arambula told police that
Patricia Urrea purchased undershirts and boxer shorts for her brother
and gave him a tote bag before he left, Gomez said.

"He was not able to return to his house, because they believed the
police where there," Gomez said.

They were on the road by noon, Gomez said.

Patricia Urrea was arrested June 13 and within a day she called her
mother from jail, Ullrich said. He recounted portions of the taped
call.

Alicia Urrea told her daughter: "I have to tell you something about
Fabian," Ullrich said.

Patricia Urrea asked her mother three times: "Is he still in the same
place?" Ullrich said.

The detective said the rest of the recording is inaudible.

Judge Mark Cope ordered Patricia Urrea held on the accessory to murder
charge with bail to remain at $500,000.

Gallon declined to comment when asked if Fabian Urrea's parents will
be charged with any crime in light of detectives' testimony about
their involvement with their son's escape.

"So, likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill will, and a disposition to retaliate in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld . . .

"Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government . . . Excessive partiality for one foreign nation and excessive dislike of another cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots who may resist the intrigues of the favorite are liable to become suspected and odious, while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people to surrender their interests.

" . . . nothing is more essential than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular nations and passionate attachments for others should be excluded, and that in place of them just and amicable feelings toward all should be cultivated. The nation which indulges toward another an habitual hatred or an habitual fondness is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest."
